Getting there
How to reach the lake from major cities.
| How | Time | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Car: Drive via the National Road (VOAK) connecting Chania and Rethymno, exit at Georgioupoli, and follow the well-marked inland road for 4 km to the lake. | 45 mins from Chania, 30 mins from Rethymno | null | Ample parking is available along the shore near the restaurants, but it fills up quickly in July and August. |
| Train: Tourist 'Fun Trains' (like Talos Express or Euro Express) operate daily round-trips from the coastal resort of Georgioupoli and nearby hotels directly to the lake. | 20-30 minutes from Georgioupoli | ~10 EUR round trip | A very popular and scenic option for families without a rental car. |
| Bus: Take a KTEL coach bus traveling between Chania and Rethymno, disembark at Georgioupoli, and then take a short taxi ride or the land train to the lake. | 50 mins (bus from Chania) + 10 mins (taxi) | ~6 EUR for bus + 10 EUR for taxi | Public buses do not go directly to the lake; a transfer in Georgioupoli is mandatory. |
| Tour: Book a guided day tour or bus excursion from Chania or Rethymno that combines Lake Kournas with other sights like Argyroupoli springs or Chania Old Town. | Half-day or Full-day | 30-60 EUR | Includes hotel pickup and drop-off, removing all transportation logistics. |
