The deeper waters and marshy edges of Lake Kournas form a delicate natural habitat. Motorized boats are prohibited, keeping the 579,000-square-meter surface quiet.
You will need to rent a pedalo or canoe from the eastern shore to reach these outer areas. This is where you can find the deepest swimming spots and the best chances to see rare turtles.
30 minsAccess by pedalo
The lake reaches its maximum depth of 22.5 meters (73 feet) near the center. The water shifts to a deep dark blue, and you can see ancient algae formations below. Pedal your boat out to the middle and drop the anchor if it has one. This is an excellent spot to jump into the clear freshwater for a swim.
45 minsWildlife spotting
These quieter marshy areas are lined with thick reeds and vegetation. They provide a habitat for eels, ducks, and rare Diamondback or Balkan terrapins. You must approach these edges very quietly on your pedalo or canoe. Turtles are easily spooked by loud noises and will quickly dive underwater.
15 minsCold water spring
This is one of the primary underground mountain springs that feed the lake. It becomes visible near the southeast bank during late summer when water levels drop. Swimming near this spring reveals a distinct drop in water temperature. You can feel exactly where the fresh mountain groundwater flows into the lake.
