Is Lake Kournas worth visiting?
Yes. It is the only natural freshwater lake in Crete. Visitors enjoy calm waters for swimming, pedalo rentals, and spotting rare wildlife.
Can you swim in Lake Kournas Crete?
Yes. Swimming is permitted and safe. The water temperature is pleasant from May to October. Do not harass the local wildlife while swimming.
Are there turtles in Lake Kournas?

How deep is Lake Kournas?
The maximum depth is 22.5 meters (73 feet) near the center. The lake holds roughly 7.5 million cubic meters of water in the summer.
How to get to Lake Kournas from Chania?

Can you walk all the way around Lake Kournas?
No. You cannot walk the full 3.5 km perimeter. Thick vegetation and changing water levels block the path on the western and southern shores.
Do you have to pay to go to Lake Kournas?
No. Entry to the lake is free. Parking is often free if you eat at a nearby taverna, or costs a few euros in dedicated lots.
How far is Lake Kournas from Rethymno?
The lake is 20 km from Rethymno. Driving takes about 30 minutes. You can also book Tickets with transport directly from the city.
Are dogs allowed at Lake Kournas?
Yes. Dogs are permitted on unorganized beaches and in the water. They must be kept on a leash and must not disturb the wildlife.
How much does it cost to rent a pedalo at Lake Kournas?
Renting a pedal boat costs between 10 and 20 EUR per hour. The price depends on the size of the boat. Bring cash to pay the rental kiosks.
What kind of fish are in Lake Kournas?
The lake contains local fish and eels. Fishing is restricted to protect these populations. Small fish can be seen clearly if you bring a snorkeling mask.
